Self Defense Designed for Native Women
Kinapiskw'k means Warrior Women in the Mi'kmaq language. We train Native American and First Nations women to build real-life self defense skills in order to stop the epidemic of assault, kidnapping, and rape when faced with the point of impact. Designed by a Mi'kmaq woman for Native women, this program will give you the skills you need to protect yourself and your loved ones. Our goal is to empower women to be their own warriors and actively work toward a time when not one more sister, mother, aunt, cousin, or daughter becomes missing or murdered. Below you’ll find the information you need about our courses, our team, or our methodology. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Contact us today.
CLASSES AND COURSES
Our methodology was developed for any woman to combat learned helplessness, victim mentality, and abuse.
At Kinapiskw’k we explore the problem of conflict at different levels. We teach you how to identify a predator, recognize active options, and how to protect yourself. We train you to recognize details that could help an investigation lead to resolution and improve accurate memory recall in times of extreme stress. Self Defense skill building is accomplished through multiple scenarios using techniques that actually work. Learning and skill-building is based through interactive components with the intent to build confidence, self esteem, and community as well as hard hitting self defense skills.
D.A.N.C.E. SELF DEFENSE COURSE
This 360 degree Anti-Victim program trains you to not only identify the danger signs of potential violence and human trafficking but also how to acknowledge and override personal fears to physically act through specialized self-defense techniques. We call our process D.A.N.C.E. and it involves using easy, large muscle group movements inspired by and found within traditional/powwow dances as well as martial arts and practical military combat skills. No prior training is required. This is not a karate class. Girls, Teens, and Adult courses are available. Get in touch with questions or to learn more.
INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION COURSE
Through this advanced offering, students who have taken the D.A.N.C.E. course have the opportunity to push their skills, techniques and confidence to a new level by becoming a Certified Kinapiskw'k Instructor. Certified instructors teach in their own tribal communities. Contact us today to learn more about each of our course offerings.
Founded in honor of Virginia Red Bear Pictou (Mi'kmaq) who went missing on April 24, 1993.
We are the ONLY action-based program in the world created to directly combat the problem of violence against Indigenous Women at both the community and personal levels. We train Indigenous women and girls in self-defense using our groundbreaking 360 Degree Anti-Victim Program which is brought directly to tribal communities through our Mobile Training Unit.
We strive to bring about an end to the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women across North America by creating a thriving community of trained and aware women who are enabled to take back their own power, be their own warriors, and educate others.
The red bear paw honors the memory of Virginia Red Bear Pictou. It is in the middle of a protective circle made of the color quadrants found within a medicine wheel. Each color quadrant is encapsulated in a double curve motif which is a traditional design used by Mi'kmaq People and here, symbolizes the path each woman will take on her own warrior woman journey. The four quadrants link to form a circle representing the community of trained, aware women who will come from the program, those who will protect themselves and those they love. The eagle feathers represent the warrior bird and our connection to the Creator.
The word “kinapiskw’k” (gee-nah-bes-gewk) means warrior women in the Mi’kmaw language. We are spiritual and corporeal warriors and the first line of defense in the war against Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
